Areas of Ireland where people say "aye"
A few weeks ago a friend from down the country pointed out that I say "aye" to mean "yes" a lot and I couldn't stop noticing every time I say it. Is this something from my local Monaghan dialect or is it something I picked up from working Belfast? I did some research but couldn't find anything conclusive.
So I asked reddit ireland where are they from and whether or not they say the word "aye". The thread has 287 comments so I thought it would be fun to map it out. I got some more responses in this thread too which I've used to update the map.
When you map it out here we have a pretty nice "aye" isogloss: people in Ulster say "aye", other people generally don't.
I can finally say aye without thinking about it again.
